The guys I have dated have usually called me by my first name, and rarely, if ever by anything else. My parents occasionally call each other "dar" short for darling. I live in southern California, so there are plenty of terms people call their loved ones.

The connotation and how it's said make all the difference.

I was just re-reading some of the comments here and remembered what one of the guys I used to work with called his wife. I accidentally heard his "petname" for her by accident and was rather shocked. Yet the tone of his voice conveyed something entirely different than how the words were usually taken. He was always very kind and gallant toward her even when he was upset at her. While I would seriously object to being called that, she confided she loved it.

Definitely the ways you speak and "name" your loved one is important and gives off a comfy and cozy air to the relationship. Sometimes we use the traditional "teddy bear" "lovie", "sweetie", but in my case I use terms that are somehow related to certain events that have happened in my experience with such person. Terms that no other woman could understand just the loved one. In fact I think that is what makes your "terms" being special and unique. But remember, most than the term itself is the way you speak, your eyes and the tone of your voice, the expressions of your face, because sometimes you can say many things without speaking. If we could spend more time to embellish those details of love, I am sure there would be less lonely people in the world.
